The game begins in Nuvema Town. Ash Ketchum, along with his childhood friends Cheren and Bianca, receives a gift box from Professor Juniper containing three Pokemon. After choosing their first Pokemon and battling Bianca, they visit Professor Juniper's lab to receive Pokedexes and a Town Map. As they journey through the Unova region, the trio battles eight Gym Leaders to earn badges and challenge the Elite Four. They face the villainous Team Plasma, led by the mysterious N, who seeks to liberate Pokemon from humans, while Ghetsis has his own hidden agenda. The climax occurs when Ash Ketchum defeats N and his legendary dragon who reveals his true motivations. Afterward, Looker enlists Ash Ketchum help to capture the remaining Team Plasma members. New areas and Pokemon are unlocked, including encounters with roaming legendaries, and he faces Cynthia, the Champion of Sinnoh, in a battle.
